Food and Nutrition

Food Technology is exciting and rewarding and is available to all Gisborne Intermediate children. Classes will incorporate parts of the Technology and Health Curriculum.

The Ministry of Health recommends a three tiered system that classifies food as ‘Everyday’, ‘Sometimes’ ,and ‘Occasional’. We will be focusing on this so that children are well informed, enabling them to make lifelong healthy food choices and understand how to choose appropriate serving sizes.

We also focus on the following…

  • Understanding food labels
  • Hygienic and safe food preparation and storage
  • Measuring accurately for success
  • Use of stoves, microwave and kitchen equipment.
  • Following recipes and instructions.
  • Table setting and table manners.
  • Co-operating with others.
Lessons

Every student will participate in eight to ten lessons of one and a half hours duration. These usually occur two days in a row for four to five weeks e.g. Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday. Check the Timetable on the main Tech Arts page for what days your child will attend.

Children work with a partner and share an oven and cleaning up tasks within a team of four.
Requirements

Children will be required to complete a cook book over the 2 years at school. This will have all the recipes and extra information to help them make healthy food choices.
We use an A5 (20) pocket clearfile. (This was included on your booklist at the beginning of the year in year seven.) Please Year 8's can you bring yours with you to your first lesson.Ingredients will be supplied at school, but children may sometimes like to bring optional extras.
